Ride south for the winter - by andrew dawley

Down South, florida

Heading South

I was sitting at my house in Petoskey Michigan trying to decied what to do this winter (2011-12). I had with several friends about my idea of heading south for the winter and they all said GO FOR IT, you may never get to do it again.

I don't like to travel alone, so I had asked around to see if anyone would like to go with me. Finally my cousin Julia and her husband Ben decied that they needed a vacation. We loaded the car and put my Vulcan 900C on the trailer and on Janruary 15th we headed out. Since I had a second driver, Ben and I split responsibility and drover throght the night. After 25 hours of driveing, we made it to our first stop in Frostproof Florida.

Frostproof is a nice little town situated between Lake Clinch and Reedy Lake. Every spring the city hosts the Orange Festival where vintage cars and vedors line the streets. In the afternoon the vintage tractor parade takes center stage.

Rod & Reel Pier, Anna Maria Island

If you're going to visit Florida, make sure you go to the Rod & Reel Pier. Great food and service. Just a short walk out on the dock and your sitting having lunch. I think they'll even let you eat what you catch. The drive out to the Rod & Reel Pier on Anna Maria Island is also very nice. Take in a some sites.

I must say, Florida in the winter beats Michigan hands down. But there's nothing like riding aroud the Great Lakes with a couple friends. It's going to be fun here in Florida, but I will be happy to see some rolling hills as I head north to michigan. See ya when I see ya. Andrew D.

Kentucky Pre-season Motorcycle Trip

On March 27 of 2010, Jay Neff, Jim Guess and I (Andrew Dawley), started our journey to Kentucky.

It was about 1:00am when we got on the road. Jay had looked at the weather after work the night before and realized that we would be driving through a blizzard if we didn't move our departure time up to 1:00am. Jay was absolutely right. As we left Good Hart Farms Storage, in Good Hart Michigan, it started to rain. By day break we had traveled south past the cold front and well on our way to Kentucky.

We drove strait through the night and into the next evening to reach our destination by dinnertime. Arriving at Jim's relatives, we promptly unloaded the motorcycles and luggage. After a quick meet and greet, we had dinner and took a well deserved nap.

The weather in michigan had turned nasty, high winds and several inches of snow had fallen since we had left. The weather in Kentucky was perfect, every day we spent riding was in the mid 70's and sunny.

On my way back from the U.P. I recorded this video as I traveled over the Mackinaw Bridge. Don't let the greats on the bridge scare you, it's not tha bad.

This video is from my trip to the Keweenaw, Eagle Harbor, Michigan. A great place to visit.

Petoskey Breakwall

Come on out on the Petoskey Breakwall with me. The weather is starting to warm up and the ice is going to melt. Don't miss out on a fun experience and don't forget to put on ice cleats when walking on the Breakwall in the winter time, it's all ice.
